Even though it was written in 1920, it wouldn’t see publication until it was included in The Fantasy Fan in June 1934.

Not much is said about this story. Though it’s theorized that the narrative use of the pineal gland might be a reference to that of René Descartes, who proposed that this gland was the point of mediation between the material body and the immaterial soul.

The audiobook recording appears to be part of a cassette-era audiobook of Lovecraft stories, but I have not been able to source the origin at this time. For added flair, Unnatural Situation, by Kevin MacLeod.
